“I thought this was very worthwhile for the children. It was great to see his artwork in different stages, and the children were totally engaged in their project.”

-Kathy Stines, New Hope-Solebury 2nd grade teacher

I love to visit schools. School visits are fun, and a great way to get kids excited about reading.

A full day school visit includes three assemblies for the first through sixth graders, a visit to the kindergarten,

lunch with selected students, and as much book signing as there are books to sign. You can book me for a

full day or for one or two assemblies.

Each assembly consists of Powerpoint visuals accompanied by a discussion of such things as the

kind of books I read as a boy, what inspired me to become a picture book author/illustrator, where my ideas

come from, and everything that’s involved in writing and illustrating a picture book. I always try to reinforce

the idea that a good story goes through many revisions and that there’s a lot of erasing in drawing. Next

I draw a few characters from my books. After that comes the part the kids love best... DRAWING!!

Each student creates their own version of one of my characters as I lead them step-by-step. At the end of

each presentation I answer as many questions as time allows.

My honorarium is $850 for a full day school visit or $400 per assembly.

(+ travel expenses if your school is more than 50 miles away.)

Before my visit:

  1. *Email me the schedule when you have it worked out. Please try to allow for 15 minutes between assemblies.

  2. *Send home book order forms to your students. You can download here: Lee Harper School 2012 Visit Book Order Form-2.doc

  3. *Share my books with your students and engage them in related activities, some of which can be found in ‘Fun Stuff’

  4. *Ask the teachers to have their students arrive at the assembly prepared with three pieces of paper, a surface to draw on, and something to draw with.

* Prepare questions for the question and answer time.

Day of my visit:

* Have an LCD projector, a projector stand, extension cord, and a screen ready.

* Set up an easel with a big pad of paper for me to draw on.

* Have a mic ready, unless the room is small enough to do without. (Hands-free is preferable as I'll be drawing.)

“I thought it was an awesome experience for the students. They learned so much from (Mr Harper). The feedback from the teachers has been great, too!”
